I have read on some of these posts that many of the challenges that face us are do to the fact that there is a lack of public education and awareness as to what PTs do and stand for. I was wondering why succesful PT establishments dont get together and pay for television ads that will serve to educate the public as to what we do, how long we spend in school to do what we do, and why they should ask their doctor for PT treatments above anything else, for any pathologies that they might be suffering from. I believe that doing this, instead of buying commercial time for their individual clinic, will help out the PT profession as a whole.

That would be a great service, but unfortunately it would never happen. PT, at least in the US, is far too driven by profit and money, from large corporate entities to the individual PT owner. With the high costs of TV advertising, and the frugality of the average PT, I just can't ever see that happening. Only the large, hospital based rehab systems, with "throw away" money advertise on TV on a regular basis. I have only seen one private company ever advertise on TV in my region.

I think that such advertising is the role of the APTA as our representative body...not the individual or company practitioners. If you are profit driven, then advertising on TV or otherwise would make sense too...not just if you want to promote the profession.
Perhaps from a marketing standpoint this approach isn't compatible with our profession. I just think of the Personal Injury Lawyer adds etc...and what it makes me think of them. To my knowledge there are no medical specialities that do TV advertisment.
I always thought that Med schools should have Allied Health seminars and that PTs should educate here. I think the MDs do a lot more educating to their patients based on their opinions than any other source the lay man might have...lets push for that!

I agree with Julie...TV advertising is not something you see individual medical practitioners participating in...maybe the large hospital systems only.
The physicians are the ones who can and will market us the best. I have had countless patients tell me over the years "Dr So and So said if you can't get this better, nobody can" or "Dr. So and So said you know more about this stuff than any general MD". That is the best advertising you can get, plus positive feedback from patients you have treated in the past.

Two years ago, we tried a Posture Project with grade 2 students during National Physiotherapy Week. It worked so well the a lot of the physios in the province used our project the next year. This project is designed so that the teaching staff in any school could take over and do it once they have seen a physio do it. Projects like these sell the profession without leaving a bad aftertaste.
