just needed some advice on education. Would like to start a new program. Here are my options and i am open to more. Get an academic degree like DPT or start the McKenzie Diploma program. I’m not to keen on the DPT b/c I don’t think there is a great carry over to patient recovery in an outpatient orthopdic setting. I really have nothing negative about the McKenzie system just that I don’t want to be the only one with a without a DPT in the nieborhood. I know a lot of you are going to say its not what credentials you have its your clinical outcomes. Lets assume that my patients are getting better (this is questionable). i just like an academic challenge Thanks, Rodger

Rodger, My advice would to go for the academic degree 1st, especially since the window (time) for getting the t-DPT is narrowing( at least where I'm getting mine). The many certifications will most likely be available for many years to come. Scott

thanks scott, i was told the APTA is working on a Grandfather clause so i guess I was looking for something more practical for getting patients better in the clinic. but i am pro DPT

I wouldn't count on grandfathering.
The DPT has certainly widened my perspective, and I practice in a pretty challenging environment as it is. Go get the DPT. Not for the "doctor" thing, which most of us don't care about and is a title we won't use, but for the structured academic process and revisiting of basic science melded to clinical experience. School's so much better the second time around, in terms of my ability to appreciate it.
I'm not sure I'd put too much stock in alphabet certifications. Additional ones, I mean. All of ours are of course the best, right? (wink)

Rodger, Virginia Commonwealth University, I have 1 class left in the fall, and I'll be done. I agree with Jason in the sense that school the 2nd time around is much more productive, as far as you knowing what your area of interests are. Also, and I'm sure some people will take this the wrong way, with some of the certifications, you may be getting a clinically relevant treatment approach, but you usually get a very biased approach. What I am learning now will enable me to decide for myself, (based on literature, and sound physiological principles) what treatment approaches may be best for a particular patient, especially when they don't fit certain patterns. Scott

U of S? I was close to going there for PT myself, if nothing else, just to play home baseball games at the Lackawanna County Stadium.

Scott, i agree certain disciplines have biased opinions. You said sound research? i was a little confused bc the McKenzie Method has a lot of research to back it up. When i went to Mck. A the instructor said there is no other method of back treatment out there that has the same quantity of research other than the Chiro Manipulation. So i guess, what do you mean ''based on literature, and sound physiological principles''? Anyway, I get your basic point>> Mck says disk.. Maitland says mob everything, Mulligan says MWM, Gary Gray say use transverse plains... I do see your point

What is PT school nowadays? Two years after undergrad?
If I get bored or reimbursement drops drastically, maybe I'll head up there. Hey, I still have a year of eligibility left for playing collegiate ball!

Just for clarification, most of the "chiropractic manipulation' research quantity is in fact done by physical therapists who perform manipulation.

Rodger, I wasn't refering to the McKenzie approach per say, And am not real familiar with alot of their research, unless it comes through Spine or JOSPT, I was more alluding to sticking with treatment methods that if they don't have the research done yet to back them up, at least utilize those based on reasonable physiologic principles. (Avoiding craniosacral/MFR) Scott

with your credentials already I'd go for DPT or PhDPT or DScPT or FAAOMT, but nothing else besides those. I just finished my t-DPT program, it was worth it! "Dr" Ben Galin, PT, DPT, OCS

Buddy- It's a 3 to 3 1/2 year program, considering academics as well as in-clinic internships in hospitals and clinics. We thought about going to 4 years, but then we heard about other professions who did that and they had issues with educational quality, student loan default, and high rate of practice failure. I think we made the right call, as a profession. Don't you think? :) J
