I am a student physical therapist assistant, and I received electrical stimulation for the first time yesterday as the students practiced on one another. As the intensity slowly increased, the sensation on my forearm (where the electrodes were) did not feel right...it was like I was sticking my arm in an electrical socket. I had the electrodes slightly adjusted, and I felt the same unpleasant feeling. It was so unpleasant that it seemed my sympathetic nervous system began to shut down, because I became lightheaded and was losing my vision, so that I had to lay down in order to avoid passing out. Can anyone give a rationale for this type of reaction? I was not apprehensive beforehand - I was actually sort of curious to see what it felt like...but the sensation was surprisingly uncomfortable and unpleasant.
