I have a patient with a common peroneal nerve injury with significant foot drop.  Was injured hitting knee on dashboard in MVA.

MD wants NMES.  Does anyone have any protocols or information on recommended frequency and duration of NMES?

Thanks

Do you have a heel switch device? Pretty much essential.
Does your e-stim device have a simple dorsiflexion or anterior tibialis protocol button to push...several do.
According to Clinical Electrophysiology: Electrotherapy and Electrophysiologic Testing by Robinson AJ and Snyder-Mackler L, 2nd ed. from several studies pulse durations ranged from 20-250 usec, peak pulse currents below 90mA and frequencies between 30 and 300 pps (generally on the lower end of 20-50 pps). Adjust intensity to produce a smooth tetonic contraction.
I have more info...just don't feel like typing tonight...long day at the clinic. Let me know if you need info on electrode placement (try peroneal nerve around fibular head and mid way down muscle belly). Hope this helps some.
