I am looking for information about rehab protocols s/p shoulder hemiarthroplasty.
Specifically I am looking for the NEER PROTOCOL. If anyone has any information, I would appreciate it.

There is a text called "Clinical Orthopedic Rehabilitation" that is essentially a reference tool for various Orthopedic techniques and the rehabilitation. The Neer Protocol is listed as a type of technique. There are 2 books - one is a hardcover and one is a smaller soft cover.

The most important factor is how liberal or conservative your Ortho MS is. I work with about 8 Orthopods and they vary from very conservative to very liberal...essntially the baseline is that you limit external rotation immediately post op to <30 degrees. Since I work in Acute, I don't have protocols for >2 weeks but I do work on Codman's and do gait training without the sling to allow the arm to hang to give some distraction with gravity.

Communicate with the Ortho to discuss their preferences...as we know, just when we think that listed protocols are accepted, the MS can change their mind.

The author of Clinical Orthopedic Rehabilitation is S. Brent Brotzman MD.

Thank you very much for the information. I too work in an acute setting and the ortho MD's here want us to follow the NEER protocol. We have a packet with the protocol but I am still looking for more information....I will look for that book.

Thanks again,
