I have several questions for you all, and I think I will break them up into different topics.
I practice in pediatrics, mostly with kids with neurological disorders. I find myself needing to know more about adolescents and sports. How about suggestions for books, courses, other ways to learn more in this area?
Thanks!

Gerry- Could you be more specific? What kinds of information are you looking for? The topic "adolescents and sports" seems kind of general. Are you talking about injuries/assessment / treatment or about other issues? J

Let's see, how about injury prevention, common injuries, and treatment for starters. I wasn't into sports much as a kid, just the normal neighborhood kickball/baseball. In college and grad school, Ultimate frisbee and disc golf filled my sports need, so there was no formal training and injuries were handled with "self-medication"... :)
Now I find myself with a 15 year old son who is really into basketball and weights (and has tried his hand at football and track), a 12 year old daughter who plans on being a runner, and a 9 year old son that will be into who knows what? I've managed to coach soccer and basketball in youth leagues where there primary objective was to have fun and learn basics. So I would really just like to know more about kids and sports in general. I'm a member of the pediatric section of the APTA, so will probably join the sports special interest group, but I was wondering if there were some particullarly good texts that might start my journey into this area. Or maybe a good course.
Hope that gives you some idea of what I am looking for. Really would appreciate any suggestions at all!

I think the "Sports Medicine Secrets" Book, published by Hanley and Belfus, is pretty good. Any of those "Secrets" series books are pretty fair.
I also recommend "Sports Medicine - Just the Facts" by O'Connor et al, published by McGraw-Hill.
Those books will do a good job of covering things generally, but your colleagues in the Peds Sports interest group could probably be a lot more helpful.

There is also a book specifically on Sports Rehab and Performance in kids, I just don't know the name. Search on Amazon for Pediatric Sports Rehabilitation. I'll ask my friend in ortho, I know she has the book at her clinic, and let you know the exact name.
