I think the kid from your dancing photo punched him/herself in the eye.

conjunctivitus or peri/orbital cellulitis - needs to be seen by a doc but I believe only the last one is an emergency. Steve

Hmmm. Perhaps conjunctivitis but I would like to know what the parents had to say how this came about.

Hey Dr. Wagner, I thought conjuctivitis could, in extreme cases, cause the eye to swell to where it is closed... no?

Conjunctivitis affects the conjunctiva...drainage may cause the eye to be matted shut, but the above picture is Periorbital cellulitis or preseptal cellulitis. An infection of the periorbital soft tissue.

Wags, So what would treatment be? I'm guessing in the periorbital cellulitis it would be a course of antibiotics and close watching. What about in the case of orbital cellulitis? Thanks for the presentation, this one is particularly good for a guy with three children although sadly doesnt have a good MMA story behind it! Steve

Ha! Orbital cellulitis is an infection of the posterior orbital fat pad and more, it is a medical Emergency and requires IV antibiotics, admission and ENT/optho consult. This case requires, as you stated, oral antibiotics and follow up...probably one dose of IM antibiotics prior to DC.
