people here in the philippines always have this common misconception that physical therapists are good for one thing-massage. the public is insinuating that pts end up in massage parlors (seedy ones too) and that's there only use... its like...%$#@!
the med.profession scence here is really bad- there's a proliferation of medical and nursing schools that are not even registered or accredited. we're experiencing a shortagr of doctors cause they're all taking up nursing( pretty sad...) and nurses here end up going to care-giver schools...
does anybodu else have this observation in your own place?

I wish Filipina PT's gave massages then maybe I could convince my wife to give me one. She has her only complaints about attitudes in the PI, since she married an American the assumption is that a green card or something was involved in the transaction.
I think the attitudes toward health care providers is similar in many poorer countries. Let's face it, healthcare beyond the very basic is a luxury that only wealthy countries, or wealthy individuals in poorer countries, can afford. There is a limited demand from a financial perspective and a large supply. There is also a wide variation in quality of training and little meaningful creditation or standards. Even here though there is little knowledge about what a PT is or does by the general public. I'll tell a story to demonstrate: My wife was working Home health, visiting a patients house, and she was speaking Spanish, which is what most of her patients speak. The husband of the patient heard her and said "You speak Spanish really well, I bet I could get you a job as a secretary in the office at my work". I don't know if the fact that she will be getting her DPT and PHD before long would have helped her.
I don't know if there is much of a solution to your problem. My brother-in-law graduated med school 2 years ago, and while he is working it's not the same as it is here. I would suggest that you find the most creditable professional organization you can find, join up and be active, work hard to establish and enforce standards and lobby hard for changes that need to take place.
Knowing the Phillipines maybe you can find a Miss Universe or actor to support your cause. Good luck.

thanks...i ahd a prof. with the same name as yours years ago...
well, we really cant blame the general public due to lack of information and education. as for a miss universe wanna-be and actors-nah!!!! beauty queens here end up in movies or tv...it would be really nice though but they're all busy with showbiz-as for actors...they're doing a bad job acting and being worse as politicians...(oi! pilipinas)
i wish the demand for pts would be as high as it is for nurses and caregivers...pity :(
still, we do our very best to tell people that we do more than massage.

Hello! I have been reading these with much interest. I am also a PT and i am also in the Philippines. The healthcare industry is simply a reflection of the sad state of the country. We can go on to discuss how "third world" we already are but I wouldn't like to discuss that. I don't think it is a good idea to come out on public forums such as this one too and discuss about how sad things are in the Philippines. Fly by night schools proliferate, doctors take up nursing and so on and so forth. This is how it is. I have come to terms with that reality a long time ago. There is one thing that needs to be done though. And that is for people to stop whining. For people to take control of their lives and get their acts straight. Such kind of dynamism is the way to achieve change. I am disappointed in how things are in how some people act but I am still proud I am pinoy!!!
