LBDPT -> Update on knee SONK (April 19, 2016 1:25:51 PM)

Ok, saw another surgeon from the Hospital for Special Surgery, team surgeon for the NY Giants.
May or may not be osteonecrosis of tibial plateau and medial femoral condyle, may be SCIF (subcondral insufficiency fracture). No way to tell without bone biopsy. He gave me an unloading brace to wear when weightbearing. I can walk, bike, elliptical and eventually run as long as i dont have any pain. original guy misdiagnosed it as Plica irritation. I had never heard of SONK spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee) but if i had, I would have known to ask for an MRI immediately, as I am 1. female 2.55 3. do weight lifting and running. It seems i fractured back in November when I felt the sharp pain while on the floor treating a baby. had it been diagnosed properly i would not have resumed weight lifting (I do a lot of ex, but most importantly was doing squats with heavy weights) and definitely would not have resumed running. When I first saw ortho I could barely walk and had pain on palpation of medial femoral condyle, all which should have been further investigated via MRI. Currently working, wearing brace, soreness with too much walking. I am looking into a bone stimulator, and will be holding my breathe until June's MRI.

Well then there's no way to know until the MRI. Just keep trying to gradually rehab yourself until then. And good luck with the MRI when you get it.

LBDPT -> RE: Update on knee SONK 2019 (November 18, 2019 12:05:07 PM)

On a lark, decided to see if this forum was still active. I had gotten lots of helpful info when I was doing ortho. Update on my SONK:
Since I posted, I saw Dr Rodeo at Hospital for Special Surgery. He gave me an offloader brace and the ok to resume strengthening, eventually running, as tolerated. I have since then completed 2 marathons, NYC 2017, Marine Corp 2019, and will be doing Philly marathon 11-14019. I have also done 2 triathlons. My knee still feels discomfort at the medial femoral condyle at times, but I am carefully to avoid pivot movements, and continue to strengthen 3 times a week. I only run 4 times a week. Just wanted to fill anyone from 2016 in. The offloader brace was a big, big help.
