I have a friend who had an anterior cage fusion at L4-L5, L5-S1. She has a slender build (110 pounds) and developed sacrum pain post fusion. 6 months post fusion she had a physical therapist (185 pounds), while she layed on a table on her back, bend the L knee/hip so L knee went to R shoulder--- and then he applied all his weight to the back of the bent up thigh--- and then he pulled himself against the table and herself to make it more forceful. She was pushed into excruciating pain. After the third visit she had to stop. Her pain intensified and started to radiate down both legs from her buttocks, her numbness and tingling started back down her R leg and into her foot. SHe now can barely walk. What could have possibly gone wrong? Was this a good idea to do after fusion surgery? Would you have done these stretches? She feels betrayed.

When I read your post, my initial reaction, George, was that I think your friend should try to sue the hell out of that Physical Therapist. I did not know that streching is contraindicated folowing fusion surgery...not my field of expertise so I can't really give my 2 cents here. But common sense tells me that that strech could produce the symptoms you describe in your post.

On second thought, it is a bit strange that your friend would volunteer to return to therapy three times before stopping. How could your friend let that happen George? BTW, does your friend know you are posting questions about her medical history on this bulletin board?

Dear Curious:

I definitely have an opinion on this matter but I am declining to offer it. To me.....this sounds like a legal inquiry on your part.

Respectfully,

6 months after the fusion? Seems to me that the fusion would have "taken" by then. Our post-fusion patients are given no restrictions by their surgeons as they enter PT (usually a month to 2 months after the surgery).
