My boss is thinking about paying his staff based on how many pts they see/units charged....His thought is taking a percentage of how much we are reimbursed per patient (say 33% of the $115 we are paid per patient = $39 per patient).  This is motivating to see more than the typical 1.5 pts/ hour.  He would look at our past years average reimbursement per patient (for each therapist) and pay us that average per patient.
He wants to know if others have done this.
Is the PT then a "contract" PT
Are all normal benefits ie: health insurance, malpractice, vacation time still payed even though all we make is based on HOW MANY patients we see......if we take a week vacation and see 0 pts do we get $0.
thanks,
mike

Be skeptical.  I was in a clinic like this and it was an absolute nightmare.  PTs fighting over patients, the front desk under constant pressure, doctor lists, back-stabbing, etc.  It is just not a team atmosphere.

I think it is a good idea, provided you have a good staff so that things dont happen like alodato experienced.
It is a motivator to go the extra mile, instead of being just average. If you help your boss grow his business you experience instant monetary compensation for doing so.

we just began the program 3 weeks ago...so far so good.  I'll keep everyone updated as it progresses.  It seems that PTs are all too happy to fall into that "staff" position.  This is not the case in other healthcare professions.  I think this is a nice middle ground for those who are interested in possibly becoming more independent and maybe eventually opening up on their own.
