About a year ago, several local PTs put on a symposium including a variety of pediatric topics. I attended (I'm an academic), as did several of our students. At the conclusion of a presentation on "Minimally Involved Children", one of the students asked a question using the term "Developmental Coordination Disorder". The presenter's entire response was " No one in (this province) uses the term Developmental Coordination Disorder". Our students are given this terminology because of its use in DSM, its support by the consensus exercise, and its use in their text, as well as the fact that it accurately depicts the physio problem. I wasn't given any opportunity to participate at that time, so I'm still wondering what most professionals consider to be the preferred term. Up until several years ago, we were using Developmental Dyspraxia as it was then being taught by an OT who was very strong in Sensory Integration, and we had no text at that time. It's always unfortunate when students are undermined in this way by clinicians they encounter, so I'd like to gather any information possible. Thanks very much, everyone!
