I don't really know if this sort of question is allowed here but figured it was worth a try--I'm currently a dance major planning on applying to PT school and have been reading these forums for quite some time.

I've just been diagnosed with my 3rd acetabular labral tear. In contrast to the others, this one is in my left hip and has no traumatic event linked to it. The first tear happened 2.5 years ago, when I was 17, and I landed horribly out of a leap--I ended up nearly rupturing my hip flexor and tearing my labrum. After two months of failed PT, it was arthroscopically debrided. After a year of continued problems and more failed PT and countless other tests, I learned that I had a cam impingement on my femoral head in addition to another labral tear--the cause was that the additional space created when the first tear was debrided allowed the impinging bump to wreck havoc and further damage the labrum. So I had surgery for that this past October which arthroscopically shaved down the bump and debrided the tear. That hip, the right, is now doing fantastically aside some from minor psoas issues just due to all the craziness it's been through with two surgeries and the near rupture. In the process of getting a diagnosis, I also learned that I have very mild dysplasia in my hips (more pronounced in the right but not a real cause for concern at this point) and a smaller impingement in the left hip.

While I was on crutches following the recent surgery, good ol' lefty started acting up. When, four weeks later, I got off crutches, it improved and I stopped worrying about it. I've been back dancing since February and since then, it's gotten worse again. I have a small tear confirmed by an MRI/arthrogram. At this point, my doc is not recommending surgery and instead wants me in PT for 2 months and then we'll reevaluate. This hip is in far better shape than the right was but I'm still worried--thus far my experience with PT is that it's fantastic coming back from surgery but it hasn't done much of anything to prevent it. Any success stories? I'm really worried I'm going to find myself, come the end of June, scrambling to book surgery and that this isn't going to work.

Thanks!

You are too young to be having all these problems!  I cannot answer your questions because I have yet to have experience with labral tears.

However, I do have some articles you may be interested in reading.  If you do not have access to these PM me. =)

Hip dysplasia and the torn acetabular labrum: AN INEXACT RELATIONSHIP R A Haene, M Bradley, R N Villar. Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. (British volume). London: Oct 2007. Vol. 89, Iss. 10; pg. 1289

Orthopedics; Physical therapists have chance in developing corresponding rehabilitation protocolsMedical Devices & Surgical Technology Week. Atlanta: Sep 3, 2006.

Acetabular Labral Tears Cara L Lewis, Shirley A Sahrmann. Physical Therapy. Washington: Jan 2006. Vol. 86, Iss. 1; pg. 110, 12 pgs

I hope this resolves for you soon and good luck in PT school!

If I had a dollar for every time I've been told that I'm too young to have these problems, I'd be so rich by now! I feel like a granny with these hips!

But thanks for the well wishes! I still have another 2 or 3 years left of undergrad (I'm finishing up my first year now but have junior standing...it's complicated) and I'm considering taking some time off to dance professionally (if these hips would do me a favor and start working!) but I'm really excited for PT school.

And thanks for the articles, I'm going to be PMing you because I can't get to them, but they sound like they should be interesting!
