Hi, I am applying for DPT programs at the moment and was wondering if any of you had any helpful advice? My GPA is 3.1 and my last 60 hours of undergrad was good 3.8 or so... my pre-req GPA is around 3.5 and I have 6 years of clinical experience in the field as a tech. Do I have a decent chance to get in? I realize it is competetive nowadays but would they not look at my extensive practical experience as a benefit to their programs?
Anyone have any opinions good or bad on University of St. Augustine?... one bad thing I noticed was the price! yikes, but it is my last resort in case I do not get into any Texas schools.

Future PT,
Compared to other private universities, USA is not that expensive. The education is great and the professors are very experienced (OCS, FAAOMPTs). It is heavy in manual therapy and well worth it. You will be well prepared while on your internships. I graduated from USA in 2002.
PT schools are competitive but you do have alittle knowledge which is definitely to your advantage.

As a ex-Texas PT grad, I can tell you should be fine, concentrate on your other pre-reqs: GRE, outside activities etc. Apply to all SCHOOLS!
UTHSCSA is decent (my alma mater) currently evolving and perhaps will emerge into a good school in approx 5-8 yrs??
Texas Tech should take you in with your accomplishments.
PT programs (Texas)have had a decline in applicants in last couple of yrs.
If I was to do it over again, Ill go to the Army-Baylor PT program it was ranked in the "top 5 in the nation in 2004" YOU WILL receive top notch training, in my opinion NO PT PROGRAM is producing this high quality of PTs. For a couple of reasons: 1) You will get taught to work as a direct access practicioner: order/interpret imaging, order/interpret labs, 100% autonomy , HANDS DOWN the best manual therapists researchers (Childs, Wainner,Fritz, Whitmann, Flynn)in the field came from there and continue to be faculty members. 2)Highly concentrated PT eduaction produced in just 27 mos 3) Opportunities for manual therapy residencies PAID for 4) Get paid approx $34,000/yr to go to PT school, while PT school is FREE 5) 100% healthcare benefits and all the other perks that come from being in the military.
Ok thats more than a couple of reasons, but take my word when i say it is a well-designed PT program.
I was fortunate to attend one of PT school clinicals at the Army-Baylor manual therapy institute, it was by far the highlight of my PT education.
Put it this way, the level of autonomy and incredible knowledge that Military PTs had, motivated me enough to join the Uniformed Services.
I only regret not doing this earlier, had I done so I would not be $50,000 in the hole.
Food for thought.

I agree with PHSPT. Looking back, I wish I would have gone to Baylor for the same reasons but at the time that never crossed my mind nor did anyone mention it.
Read the posts from Alex B (ArmyPT) and Jason Silvernail on here (both Baylor grads)..they are both very knowledgeable

yes you would have to, the DPT is the entry level degree open to all who come from the outside and enter any of the 7 Uniformed Services PT profession.
The Dsc program is available in conjunction with a manual therapy fellowship/residency 18 months LONG! awesome hands on, this educational component is a bit more tricky to get into, open to already within the service seasoned PT's. Pretty competitive to get into, only admit 4-6 candidates from all Uniformed Services per class.
Hey marry a US citizen and voila!.... I actually met a Canadian civilian PT while doing my rounds at BAMC Fort Sam Houston, TX who had married an Air Force service member.

Jason Silvernail is an Army PT but didn't go to Baylor. He is still a good guy though ;)
Going to the Army-Baylor program is probably the best decision I have made in my career and working with soldiers, especially with those who have been injuried at war, has been very rewarding.

thanks for the info!
I have a bachelor in PT, and a Masters in Research (Rehab Science). Would I need a DPT to apply for DSc at Baylor?
I will probably apply at ANdrews U. any thought about this University, I want to specialize in OCS/manual therapy and a residency would be great.
ANy on can give me clues of where toapply/best schools?

To my knowledge you dont need a DPT for the Army Baylor Dsc program, you need a Msc or MPT..I believe.
Im not sure what you mean by where do you apply? Are you joining the military physsioo?? The only way you can apply to Baylor Dsc program is to be an active duty officer in any of the 7 US Uniformed Services. Check out the link:

If you are interested in other good US civilian programs I suggest you look into Regis University, Rocky mountain DPT program/fellowship.
If you want more hands on residency type of manual therapy training, google Kaiser Permanente and check out their 6 month fellowship/residency in manual therapy, ive heard good things from this program.

I looked at Kaiser...it does sound interesting, one problem, im a canadian PT and planning to move to Michigan next yearm so that fellowship might be far!
Rocky Mountain..the DSC with ortho and sports specialization looks good, but little knwoledge as regards to Manipulation/Manual therapy.
Regis also looks cool...tho once again far.
Im being inclined to Andrews, but this will be checked once i move to STates hopefully next year! Let's see, hopefully NPTE wont kill me!

I graduated from [URL=http://www.hsutx.edu/academics/graduate/programs/physicaltherapy/]Hardin-Simmons University[/URL] in Abilene, TX...only a 2.5 hour drive West of DFW. It was a great school and they were the 1st in Texas to offer an entry-level DPT. However, I was the last class that graduated with a Masters but I do plan on completing my DPT through HSU.

I think all UT system PT schools are in transition into the DPT program. Does anyone here know how long it might take?

I am very interested in knowing more about quality of FLEX program at Uinv St Aug. Do you know anyone who has similar interest or graduated form FLEX? I think the program started in 2005.
