He'll remember that he was important enough to you for you to take time out of your day to contact him.  You did the right thing. 

Maybe what you ought to also do is see if a sign actually has to be posted.  How many of your patients have weapons on person?  One person was turned off by a sign... you can always discuss with management the rationale for the sign.  If management decides to eliminate the sign and determines that most citizens in your local area aren't going to be bringing in weapons and it really isn't some huge issue, then I would contact the patient again and thank him for pointing out that most citizens know the law and there wasn't a reason for the sign.
