Will this open a huge can of worms?

Yes, it will re-start the hot debate of pro- versus contra-manipulation, with the added spice of one study showing safety, and another showing risk; with statistics being bandied about, and with the whole idea of upper cervical manipulation once again under the microscope.
It will likely be another impetus for chiros in Canada to venture into non-manipulative therapies (ART etc etc), thus making PTs sit up and checking encroachment on their scope.....
And the dance continues.

It's chiropractors need to do this that is getting them into trouble and not the manip itself so much.  NO REASON to do mantainance manip.  Just a way to get more money and try to bolster a profession into a PCP market they do not belong.  DC's are digging their own graves with this.  Too bad chiros like Bonez may have to suffer b/c of it.

I apologize for posting this a second time.  Didn't realize it was already posted.  Very unfortunate event.  However, she is not the only patient to suffer a stroke.  There a many other documented cases in Canada and the US.  A great book/reference is 'Spin Doctors: The Chiropractic Industry Under Examination'.  Here's the link:

Your right when you say that this will open the debate about the risks of manipulation.  Many different studies all quoting different stats.  I hope that this will be the beginning of the end of 'maintenance' chiropractic manipulation.  I also hope that the public will become a bit more informed about the unneccessary use of cervical manipulation by so called 'doctors'

The case is not just about spinal manipulation, but about the Chiropractic profession as a whole.

This was quoted in the Edmonton Journal:  Chiropractic "had its origins in borrowed and mystical and occult practices of a bygone era."

In the press conference today, the lawyer says he wants to eliminate the practice of neck manipulations by chiropractors for maintenance and prevention.

This story is huge.

Huge alright. To bad for the chiropractors that attempt to treat in an ethical/evidence based manner. But the ship is sinking.

I wonder if we will see the CCA pony up here or if they will somehow spin this one? We all know what the responsible thing to do would be.

Very unfortunate story. Let's hope this one results in improved safety standards of care.

I'm sure the CCA is thinking long and hard about what they're response will be in this case.  I'm sure they have a team of lawyer's advising them.  I think it would be a mistake to try and spin this one.  I hope the public gets involved and starts asking questions about manipultation and what other forms of treatment are available for neck pain.  I would also like to see PT Associations use this as a window of opportunity to promote our evidence based profession to the public.
