Talk about polar extremes in diagnosis theory! I'm thinking simple meralgia paresthetica, and SJ has the poor girl in a straightjacket and poopin her pants!!!!

A straightjacket is an extreme - I was just saying she's worrying over nothing and she has no substantial problem that requires any worrying. One of those cases of "we know too much" so we ponder it and give it weight and worry when we shouldn't be giving it any thought. A little area of reduced sensation on the thigh is something for concern??? I told her, just like I tell all my patients that come in with severe pain and worry, when she really needs to worry. LOL And now, Duff, you give her a big, long diagnosis that sounds scary! Like you're helping a non-issue. LOL

Hey all, I really appreciate all of your feedback. I woke up this morning and I regained sensation. I'm going to watch over this the next fews days to see what happens!

Rod, Its called meralgia paresthetica. I can figure out the paresthetica term, and the algia, l but I dont know why the mer part, as in french, that means sea. But who understands the french anyway. Perhaps it is a derivation of "see,....my leg is numb right here".... Ok, I have been driving too long. EDIT: Proven by the fact that I didnt see the page two, where John Duffy already noted the term. Steve

Mer in Greek stands for "A part; the thigh", from A Dictionary of Word Roots and Combining Forms.

Thanks Steve. That's a name that I never can jam through my memory banks for some reason. Thanks for looking up the etymology on that J. It should help me remember from now on.

They also refer to meralgia paresthetica as 'Christina Aguilera' syndrome due to the low rise jeans cutting off the lateral cutaneous branch of the femoral nerve. There has been an increase in the last few years due to people wearing lower and lower cut jeans. I've seen some young people that may be cutting off their tibial nerve with their jeans! Maybe we could call this 'Eminem' syndrome. It can also be caused by morbid obesity due to the abdomen hanging low enough that it pinches the nerve. Hard to imagine! Annpsu25 I'm sure you don't have this problem! Rob

I had a returnign patient over Xmas with this problem...HUGE gut, and he had begun some serious mileage bike rides, so I figured simple irritation and compression. I had to struggle to get the stomach up out of the way to put in the ionto patch.

Rod: It's probably because you LOOK 12, and are still wearing the jeans from when you WERE 12 that is causing the problem

I am feeling much better. No numbness, all feeling returned by saturday afternoon. My instructor is still convinced its a herniated disk, but whatever. haha. It just doesn't seem to 'fit'. No radiating pain down my posterior leg, just sensory loss at the L1-L2 dermatome. We will see how this plays up in the future. Like all of you have said L1-L2 is not common, and I am young, not overweight. Thanks for asking, I will keep you guys updated!
