What kind of PT/PTA programs are you going/have gone through? What are the requirements to get in?  How many to a class? What is the pass rate for the boards/for the class?

I'm currently a PTA student at Penn State and I am in my last semester.  I am interested in how other programs are run.

I'm a PTA Student in Ontario Canada. I am taking my course at Everest College and am close to 6 months into our 10 month program. Usually PTA programs in Ontario are a two year course, however the program at Everest is an accelerated 10 month program.

We study modules such as:

• Introduction to Rehab
• Anatomy and Physiology
• Human Development
• Functional Movement
• Human Disorders
• Clinical Physio 1 (Orthapeadics)
• Communications 1 - Client Care
• Clinical Physio 2 (Therapeutic)
• Communications 2 (Client Record Management)
• Introduction to Gerontology
• Clinical Physio 3 (Neurology)
• Career and Employment Strategies
• Physical Agents
• Rehabilitation Processes
• CPR/First Aid
• Clinical Case Studies
• PTA Clinical Placement (325 hours)

Our classes are small groups. We have 16 in our class, which gives our instructor the ability to effectively teach us. Once we graduate, we will be PTA's. There is no Board/Licensing for Ontario, however there will soon be Legislation for PTA's to be licensed soon.

That is about all the information I can think of for now.

Very interesting to hear about your school in Ontario!  Our program is 2 1/2 years.  In the 1st semester we had 69 students (a lot i know), but this quickly narrowed down, and we now have 21 in our class that is too be graduating soon.  Our course schedule includes:

General Ed classes
Intro to PT
Psychology
Anatomy
Physiology
Ethics
Kinesiology- which includes everything you can imagine (physics, etc)
PT muscle anatomy
Modalities I
Modalities II
Ther Ex
PTA Licensure Review
Ther Ex II
Rehabilitation
3 Clinical placements
80 hours of observation at a nursing home, inpatient, outpatient and a support group.

We then need to take our state boards and graduate.

Our Instructor is a machine and never quits teaching.  She is a DPT, and is basically teaching this program as if we were in a 2 year cram program for PT school.  Our school also has 100% pass on the boards.

I forgot to mention that I am also doing some volunteering at the same clinic I will be doing my placement at Ancaster Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre. This has given me an edge in the classroom since I am getting some real experience. Although the treatments I do are repetitive (US, EMS, IFC etc.) others are more fun like when I get to do traction. My PT is a real encyclopedia for knowledge and is always testing me on anatomy etc.

If you can I recommend you volunteer. Well worth your while.

BTW, how close are you to Virginia? My buddy is going to work at a large sports clinic there and they are currently looking for PTA's. I'll get their web site for you tomorrow if you like.
