coupling motion of the spine? This is a superb example of what happens when universities churn out poor PT's. Proud: Although I may not be as astute an academian as you, discovering fault in what was taught by reading a professional journal does not make me a poor physical therapist (if that was your point). Yes, as a student I did not cross-reference everything that was taught to me. Crevidence: After re-reading your post on ethical conduct by PTs I can see where I went off half cocked (not to mention I misspelled logarithym). Perhaps 'edit' would have been a better choice of words. I can't really argue with the point that you put forward with some obvious thought, however, what caught my attention, and what I had a problem with, was your conclusion about performing therapies based in FACT. My feeling is that statistical significance does not make something fact, so I cannot say that everything I do is based on fact. Maybe certainty, but not pure fact. You pointed out that EBM is not based on absolutes and I'm glad to hear that. I really have no problem with EBM (did I post somewhere that I did?)--I was just trying to make a point that physical therapy doesn't always solve everyones problems (at least in my experience). quote:
I don't believe in the art of therapy as you describe. What I failed to describe would be aspects of treating patients that includes things like interpretation of subjective reports, asking the right question, finding the source of the pain, knowing how hard to push, when to push, and where. A therapist who has "good hands" or a "nice touch" --it is difficult to quantify those qualities, but they can greatly influence outcomes. So you can call me an alternative apologist--I have no problem with that. I just try to keep an open mind, especially when dealing with people, pain, and the process of healing. I chose PT because it is founded in science, and I am glad that we continue to develop evidence to support our practice. I just wonder what it is about the human touch that can have, at times, a profound effect on people.

Fact: something verifiable, known to be true. It's just that a lot of studies are determined by confidence intervals and statistical significance. We can say for a fact that 95% of the time X will result in Y, but we cannot say it is a fact that X will result in Y. Pretty much hair splitting on my part, and I think I see your point.

I think I'll stick with Webster's definition of fact: - a piece of information presented as having objective reality - the quality of being actual - something that has actual existence
