If you have not visited the APTA website recently, check it out. www.apta.org they have so many valuable resources available and many of these are at no cost.

There are quick and easy to access evidence-based research, hooked on evidence, Open Door and Physical Therapy resources. Also, career management resources and educational opportunities. Additionally, there is the 'Find a PT' feature, 'For Your Health' and 'Head to Toe'.

Check it out!

Do you think that the requirement to post your name in this forum is inhibiting discussions?  A colleague of mine suggested that some may be afraid of retailiation if they criticize the APTA publicly, so they prefer to be anonymous.  I don't know where it would come from, but that my be the perception.  Any thoughts?

I'm with you Nicole.  Since I rejoined a month ago, I have found numerous resources I either didn't know or forgot had existed.  So far, it has been worth it.

I like the idea of posting our names.  I'm not slamming anyone who chooses not to necessarily, but there is a certain sense of accountability in putting your name out there.  If you have a problem with what I say at some point, good.  It gives us an opportunity to discuss it like rational adults and work it out.

With anonymity, you can duck and cover with less accountability.  Just my 2 Euros.

I'm not posting my name... I have had nothing but grief and crap from APTA delegates for being truthful in my thoughts using my name, credentials and location.  There is retaliation by those in power who make decisions and I've experienced it.  (It's a two-sided issue... I've experienced support and agreement from many non-position holding members and borderline hostility/defensiveness from those who are members in an elected position.  Those that do agree or support do it privately which doesn't help with causing change.)  I honestly don't know how the culture of the APTA can or will change when those who are in a position to listen to members really don't want to "listen" and instead choose to defend the past and severely limit the ability to communicate.  I believe the disconnect is because the majority of those in elected positions are now too far removed from the trenches and use their elected position as another "thing" on their CV and bragging rights.  I don't see that they want to solve the issues we are facing or come up with strategies - even when ideas are provided to them.

For me, it's just been a time-thing.....I usually only have the time to click thru the first 3 categories (open forum, ortho and manual).  I'd love to be able to go through all and really keep up on those conversations, but with the job, my site, wife, kids, American Idol, EIM, I just can't do it all.

But, I have had a topic thread that I want to post on this section, so hopefully can get my thoughts together and do that today.

And yes, I do believe that many are afraid to speak out, and I am sure that many in high positions are not happy about some things that are said.  But what are they going to do?   Revoke someones license?  Sneak into the specialty exam test and alter ones's answers so they fail?  I doubt it.

What they do, Duffy, is effectively disallow one to truly speak.  Messages don't get posted; no other members get to partake; and the one voicingn a concern is effectively brushed off as a piece of lint.  The discussions never happen in an environment open to others - just lots of back and forth private emails.  For those who are in elected positions to say that they want to hear what members think, it just seems ludicrous that reality is they don't want to know what members really think unless members are happy and praising all the efforts.  And then they get into the whole deal that there is "protocol" to follow... whatever. 

It blows my mind that there was some task force that has been working since 2003 or so on what members think... it took all those years to complete - now it is on the APTA website.... I think us members HAVE been saying what they found out after years of compiling it!  I'm even willing to bet that the group being paid to have a better grasp what others view physical therapy/physical therapists as will be as we members have been saying and screaming about ... no one really knows!

I will freely and openly say that if anyone in the APTA ever chooses to act in this manner toward me or any of my respected colleagues, I will give them an open invitation to jump up and kiss my butt.  I haven't been a contributing member long enough to experience this, but something tells me I'll have a few opportunities down the road.

I will have one simple answer to the APTA if they employ this tactic.  That would be to stop writing them $480 checks each year.

Has anyone else had a negative experience similar to SJ's?  For those who have engaged in the process, what has been your experience?

I doubt the APTA has an official stance on these issues, but I wonder if they do have some policy on handling disgruntled or disenfranchised membership.  I look at it as buying a ticket to a sporting event.  I'm there to support the team, but if I feel like booing, no one better threaten to discipline me as long as it's within a reasonable code of conduct.

I tried the site as a non-member and cannot find any good information regarding the journal access under Open Door.  Can anybody provide a list of PT-related journals that it does include?

They have ProQuest and CINAHL. ProQuest has only 1716 journals and include the following journals to name a few:

Physical Therapy; Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy; Cardiopulmonary Ohysical Therapy, Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development, Journal of Physical Therapy Education, British Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, Topics in Stroke Rehabilitation, The American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Athletic Training, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, British Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Clinical Outcomes Managment, The Physician and SportsMedicine, Clinical Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord, International Journal of Rehabilitation Research, Biomechanics, BMC: Musculoskeletal disorders, Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Australian Journal of Physiotherapy

CINAHL has about 144 Journals devoted to rehabilitation (obviously, not listing them) and 23 with Physical Therapy in its title.
