I agree with you. I do not think universal healthcare is the answer but I also don't feel that his option is a great deal better. My point is that those that "chose" not to purchase their own insurance (after their employers drop it) are going to be in trouble. They will need to make a choice - do I pay for my hospital ER bill or my house, do I have surgery to repair my shoulder or do I stay at home and go on SSI. Bottom line is we will always be "paying" for those that have made bad decisions, are lazy, etc. If you change one thing the effects ripple through the rest of the economy with some seen and some unforeseen consequences. His plan sounds good on the surface but.... I still think that since healthcare is so large, and has so many hands in the pot, that change will not occur quickly, nor completely.

from http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D8VDDSOO0.htm "The Federal Reserve's unprecedented intervention on behalf of Bear Stearns Cos. was intended to ease fallout from the credit crunch, but experts fear it augurs more government bailouts as the crisis worsens." Corporate welfare is even costlier than supporting lazy or needy individuals. Hopefully, whichever clown we elect, he/she will be very capable and creative to improve all of these messes (war, energy, economy, healthcare).

social safety net is a necessary thing, that said, the market should determine how much something costs. health care savings accounts plus a catastrophic policy would take care of most people. I was thinking the other day about taxes and government. I hate it when people say that the money for certain programs is from the government. It isn't. It is our money that we have given (or more correctly, had confiscated ) to the state or fed gov. They then decide where to spend it for us. If the economy is so bad (a point I dispute) then shouldn't they prioritize better and spend less money on those things that are a lower priority??? Yes, healthcare is important but in my view, the government( i.e. ME )is not responsible to pay for it. Defense, yes, roads, yes, sewer yes, research on bee mating habits no. If you personnally were having a tough year, lots of unexpected bills, would you go on that vacation to the Bahamas? If you had to buy a new car, add a new car payment would you choose to finish that basement? Of course not. If we could prioritize how our budget is spent, the the government should do the same. Rant rant rant, I feel like Dennis Miller without the vocabulary.

We're all getting the shaft; welfare recipients to us physical therapists. The only people winning are the insurance company CEO's.
