I think I'm at a disadvantage here because I'm a new member and don't have much background in some of the political issues at work. Is there some strained dynamic between this forum and the APTA? If so, I am in! Kidding of course, but I would like to be a participant in any way that helps.

SJ, Why don't you email Dr. Childs. Let us know what he says. Sebastian, my concern is that those who have not invested in the system will use the forum to criticize the APTA and rationalize why they haven't joined. We're not intending exclude anyone from learning or contributing. Perhaps APTA membership would be required to post. At this point, we are just brainstorming the idea. I guess I should clarify the vision I have. Our goal at RehabEdge has always been to contribute to the profession. I don't want the site to become the anti-APTA site. I think an APTA discussion forum would help many of us to be more informed about what they are doing, what's working well, what participants think they could be doing better, and how we could work together to enact change - with the goal of strengthening the association and profession, not dividing it. Some may argue that this version (rather than a rebel forum) would be too watered down, but I think it could be quite constructive. Dave

I suggested what Duffy could do. I don't plan on speaking for him and what he wants. (Duff, if you need Childs' email addy, let me know.) I just gave him another alternative to what might be a more readily available solution for what he described. Childs might ask detailed questions and the idea presented isn't my "baby;" I think it would be better if the person who wants to moderate is the one doing the communicating. For that matter, there is already an APTA group over there, it allows anyone to participate and doesn't require APTA membership. I used the term "rebel" in the sense that tradition and the "rules" of tradition are outdated and not working. Some rules are made to be broken. Taking the traditional communication approach isn't going to work - there aren't enough voices at the chapter level speaking (if they are speaking, no one is listening - George may have a great idea in Idaho, but if his chapter/delegate or whomever dismisses him, that idea doesn't get projected anywhere. Using technology and the internet - George may find that his idea is very well-received by the PT masses and low and behold his delegate and other delegates would be required to take action). I'm not anti-APTA... I'm anti-tradition. Why do I need to go to a fluff meeting to voice my opinion and hope there is time in the agenda for a discussion when reality is that there is transparency and technology right here and now to allow for a real discussion with people who share the same interests potentially available? It doesn't cost me gas, travel time or time away from patients... the discussion will be there 24/7 and I have the opportunity to participate at my convenience. In fact... over at MyPhysicalTherapySpace, there could be a real and live "chat" session! There is a chat room and a real time discussion could occur. The APTA needs to keep members abreast of what it is doing... blast emails. Sections need to keep their members abreast of what they are doing... blast emails. That is just a one-way loop of providing information which should be occurring. What's missing is a generalized loop for members to truly being heard. If members were truly heard, we would have had a marketing strategy/brand WAY before now. Vision 2020 and direct access might have had a different strategy that included 3rd party payor buy-in. The APTA webpage might be more user friendly.

Sometimes a forum takes on a life of its own. Who knows where it will lead us. So, I'll get it set up with Nicole and we'll see what is created from it. Dave

The APTA Discussions forum is live. It's open to all members to post and guests to view. The only rule is that if you post, you need to tell us who you are in your signature, no nicknames please. I activated a post rating function for the first time. Just for fun, whoever starts the first discussion AND whoever rates best this month will win free memberships to Duffy's PT Update. Enjoy! Dave

Sebastian... you are a "member" of this forum. Since you are a member of this forum, you have full capability to post and comment in the APTA discussion section. Dave is not making the APTA discussion forum an "APTA members only" area. Technically, you don't have to PM anyone, you can post. :)

David and Nicole: Thanks for the new section. I really hope people take advantage of it, and not be fearful that they will somehow be "blacklisted" in the PT world. I also hope someone involved in the APTA participates, and uses the forum to make a difference. I do have something to post, but don't want to be the one that wins the free PTupdate.co membership. SJ: I have seen the APTA section, and others on EIM and MyPTSpace. But, I never liked the format of a blog page. While that site has many benefits, it also reminds me of a huge building with a bunch of rooms, and one has to go room to room to find something or see what's going on. SomaSimple has done the same thing....it's just too cluttered. I still prefer this site and the simple bulletin board method. It is just what I personally prefer, quick and easy, as I don't have a lot of time to flounder. That was the way I made my own site, as I wanted something where people could log on, quickly learn something, and move on to something else, either on the net or go and watch The Price is Right. And Sebastian, your comments will certainly be welcome. I am sure there are features and benefits of the Canadian PT Association that could be used, and we just don't know what they are.

I certainly agree with this. Although I am a newcomer to this and other PT sites, I find some to be very cluttered. This forum is very easy to navigate. I find myself returning to it much more often.

MyPhysicalTherapySpace doesn't have to be visited very often. Sign up for emails within the groups of interest. I only log in when I choose to reply to something or post something or reply to a message sent to me. To each their own. This site is okay, but reality is that the people are what make it what it is. I'm still patiently waiting to hear what happened with that darn petition. I would assume the delegates discussed it... not sure what was discussed about it though.
