Tom Reeves DPT ATC -> RE: random photo of the week (December 3, 2007 9:00:33 AM)

is that a spider bite?

Shill -> RE: random photo of the week (December 3, 2007 9:52:11 AM)

I think the kid from your dancing photo punched him/herself in the eye.

conjunctivitus or peri/orbital cellulitis - needs to be seen by a doc but I believe only the last one is an emergency.

Hmmm. Perhaps conjunctivitis but I would like to know what the parents had to say how this came about.

You were kidding about the spider bite right...

here is conjunctivitis (pink eye)

Hey Dr. Wagner,

I thought conjuctivitis could, in extreme cases, cause the eye to swell to where it is closed... no?

Dr.Wagner -> RE: random photo of the week (December 3, 2007 3:52:15 PM)

Conjunctivitis affects the conjunctiva...drainage may cause the eye to be matted shut, but the above picture is Periorbital cellulitis or preseptal cellulitis.  An infection of the periorbital soft tissue.

steve -> RE: random photo of the week (December 3, 2007 10:45:03 PM)

Wags,

So what would treatment be? I'm guessing in the periorbital cellulitis it would be a course of antibiotics and close watching. What about in the case of orbital cellulitis?

Thanks for the presentation, this one is particularly good for a guy with three children although sadly doesnt have a good MMA story behind it!

Steve

Ha!  Orbital cellulitis is an infection of the posterior orbital fat pad and more, it is a medical Emergency and requires IV antibiotics, admission and ENT/optho consult.

This case requires, as you stated, oral antibiotics and follow up...probably one dose of IM antibiotics prior to DC.

jma -> RE: random photo of the week (December 5, 2007 11:51:39 PM)

Thanks for the info. Keep bringing the cases.
