It seems, maybe, the use of "expert" is different between you - John - and him - Proud.   Reading through all the posts I gather Proud to see "expert" as the one practicioner of choice; and John using "expert" in terms of skill.

There is no doubt that there are different skill levels in PT for the different PT populations.  I have no clue how to treat women's health issues (although I am a PT) but a co-worker is highly skilled in it.  So, she can be constued as an "Expert" in terms of her skill.  However, I hope we both can be seen as "experts (providers of choice)" for neuromusculoskeletal problems.

IMO, we have to be very careful not to let expert skill progress to a guru following.  This is a difficult problem in our profession.  Practitioners lock onto one person - I'll call 'em the Expert Guru - and all pt's are treated with the Expert Guru's teachings.  We see this with "theory" following such as MFR, CST, (locally for me) PRI, and even Mekenzie and Maitland.  No doubt people get better with these theories, but not everyone will or should, but many of us try to pigeon hole pt's into it anyways.  IMO, it's has more to do with the time and energy we've invested in learning these theories of treatment than being closed minded that other, possibly more effective/efficient treatments, are effectively ignored.

Hi Jason,

I understood Proud to mean "provider of choice" when he writes "one expert" and I meant my posts to reflect the same.  My opinion, which I assume I'm entitled to, is that the "one expert" (there can be only one--Connor MacCleod) status should not be legislated.
