for all Canadian PTs .. what is the usual average wage (hourly or annually) one would be looking for in a clinic...for a PT with 2 yrs of experience, with BSC and master (research)... Would u ask for a fee for service or hourly? advice appreciated...

From What I have seen and heard from other graduates from my program if it is a private clinic you should be looking at around 35-40 dollars an hour so about 65-80k(40hr/week)...but it also depends on your post-grad education.. for instance are you certified in acupuncture, and have you taken any manual theray courses which should give you a higher wage.

Thanks ON... am wondering if its time to look for a new job and seeing what to ask for... I did Level 1 Acupuncture, Part A mcKenzie, 6 jam Bahram courses, and 2 other courses in Europe. I am looking at around 38 an hour, is this reasonable? Thanks...

I would say 38 an hour is definetly fair with 2 years experience but I wouldnt settle for anything less. Which of Bahram courses did you take and did you find them helpful .. I was thinking of taking a few myself...I have heard good things about them... maybe the ones on low back, cervical, and thoracic spine ..I heard it gives you a good base to start at before taking the rest of manual levels.

Is an hourly rate standard in ontario? A percentage is the norm in BC and Alberta. 2 years of part time work is different than 2 years full time. Most clinics don't really care about a nonclinical masters. By level 1 acupuncture do you mean the first course or the first series of courses and the exam? Can you do acupuncture in ont without taking the exam?

yes, u can do AP without the exam...but to cont after 2 yrs, I believe you need to do level 2 and the exam, get certified... True about the masters, tho it sux that CAnada treat a masters like ****...not like that in Us, where they offer you tuition reimbursement for a Masters! In Ontario, a percentage is offered in a number of clinics and becoming more popular..

Bournephysio, Acu is on its way to be regulated in Ontario, so many PT's who took the short courses, will have to upgrade to the standards set by the Colleges.

yeps i know... i dont feel acupuncture is worth it, but all clinics are asking for it now.... so might need to do it soon..

acupuncture is used widely in many private clinics in ontario and I think it can be a useful tool to releave some early pain and inflammation. Sav, do you know what exactly this new regulation will entail and when it will happen

I think Acupuncture is all placebo... tho an added modality to help patients is great, isnt it?

On Student, I am not sure the exact date, but the ON college web site has the information on the proposal.

Not this again. needling is probably better supported than most of our modalities. In my experience it consistently gets the most immediate and significant effects out of any modality (even better than manipulation). I probably use needling of some type on 70% of my patients which is third only to education and exercise (100% each).

easy bourne im just stating my opinion here....i am not saying I am a guru.... :p IMHO, and as i said before, AP is an added modality, but at the end of the day, its all about a hands on approach...

I agree with bournephysio ... there is some fairly good quality literature out there that supports the benefits of acupuncture as more than just a placebo.

Just to emphasize Doug's post about pay: most always you find PTs working in private practices (owned by someone else of course) for a percentage of the gross generated by them. Some get as little as 37%, some as much as 55% of gross. Depends on the location, experience of the PT, etc etc... Many specific aspects need to be considered for Revenue Canada to be an "subcontractor" at a clinic - always good to check the College website (ontario) for that info.
