To all Aetna providers,

I was just speaking with a colleague of mine in Southern California. She is in private practice and received a strange call from a person posing as a patient.

This patient wanted to know if she would discount her fees for her and if not, not take her copay.

Turns out, this was someone from Aetna posing as a patient. She told her after the fact that it would be okay to discount fees but if she didn't do it for every patient, it would be fraud.

My point is, make sure you know the regulations and you should probably talk to the APTA about this. You certainly wouldn't want to risk serious financial hardship because you were not following regulations but were indeed trying to be a good samaritan.

There is a FAQ PDF on the APTA website and the reimbursement section also has some good information.

As hard as you work for your reimbursement, it would be a shame to have an insurance company that has already slashed your fees to next to nothing, catch you a loophole.
