coloradojulie -> Wage for New Grad (July 13, 2005 6:19:00 AM)

Just curious if anyone has thoughts as to what annual salary should be paid to a new grad in a private practice setting?

Julie,

It would kind of depend on what region of the country we are discussing. Here in Central CA a new grad can expect to make something in the range of $26 to just over $30 an hour or more depending on the type of practice, benefits offered, size of the practice, etc... As to what a new grad should be paid, well I think there was a thread in the not too distant past that discussed what therapists "should" be worth, but I'm not familiar with all of the arguments that were made there. Anyone, else have some ideas?

depends on a lot, but if the understanding is that the new grad will not be expected to see the same amount of patients as the seasoned vet, and less difficult cases etc, then they should have a lower wage. However, if they are being hired in a big practice and they will have a full schedule and be treated the same and do the same job responsibilities then I was never sure why they were paid different, all that being said in northern VA it was about 45K a year for new grad, here in south fla it is about 50K a year for new grad.

I do believe ADVANCE for PTs website has a salary calculator that evaluates years of experience, type of setting and location.

Good luck and enjoy practicing!!!!!!

Physical Therapists, both new grads and expenienced are under paid!

Most new grads get around 43 to 45K per year.
TAke time to negotiate. Don't be sorry later.

I am actually hiring a new grad for our practice and asked each one what they thought they should get paid. One said 45K the other said 54K-60K. Quite a swing. I am going to offer I think $46,000. (35 hours a week, one patient an hour).

What do you think?

Coloradojulie,

Considering the PT is a new grad....plus the working conditions (35 hrs. at one patient an hour), is is quite reasonable. Providing they also have benefits (health insurance, vacation time, sick time, ...etc.)

Do you place new workers on a 60 or 90 day probationary period? MIght be a good idea.

Also, I know this is a little off topic, but how do you keep the facility profitable at one an hour. B/w poor reimbursements and cancellations........how do you do it?

Thanks,

tom
