How much experience do you think you need in a private practice setting before opening up? thanks for your thoughts

Truly? None. It can be done right out of school. Not common, not without BIG risks!
I know of three more or less local PTs who did it right out of University (one by himself, and two in another). Worked part-time locum for three months while building their own clinics in a new stripmall and a new medical building. In a city with many clinics. They built near newly developed lands for housing, with new retail and commercial. Marketing was by flyer door-to-door at the residences, by letter to the health and safety manager at businesses, by billboard ad for a month, AND by extensive MD office visits. A LOT of work - but it is now 11 years and 6 years later for those clinics and they are still doing well...
So much depends on where you want to be, what the others are in your target-area, what country you're in, what state etc etc.

Thanks for that. While I havent got too much experience under my belt, it seems working in private practice you have to develop your own client list anyway and so are essentially starting your own business anyway. I'm beginning to feel stupid building up someone elses business.

Hurray cadenza! You will learn to do by doing, but keep your mind open enough to allow updated information and learning to constantly fall in.
