Its been awhile since I read this this post-sure has grown since I last posted.
Since I have been a partner in a successful private practice and now own a company that advocates and supports marketing efforts of PT's, I would like to weigh in on the discussion.
As far as the consulting work shops go, they do teach you valuable info about business. In my opinion, they just offer strategic information and leave the work - implementation up to the PT.
Bottom line is that you have to first learn NPV, Days in AR, return on investment, opportunity cost, and all of the other business and financial information somewhere. I would recommend Nosse, Friberg, and Kovacek's Managerial and Supervisory Principles for Physical Therapists. This text provided me with a solid foundation.
Then you have to implement the strategies. Understand that if you spend a dollar now to get five in a month that it may just be worth it.
Build relationships, network, and realize that there is no other profession that offers what physical therapists offer - we are rehabilitation specialists. We seem to forget.
I started a blog at e-rehab.blogspot.com for private practitioners. Weigh in and let me know your thoughts. My company was created to help people just like you. We consult yes, but we also implement solutions so you can treat.
I would be very interested in learning what others want and need to build a successful business.
