I can't... there is an error and it has been that way forever! I've got emails I've never even been able to read, let alone delete! :(

I wear them in the gym when I am working with patients only because all other therapists do and so the risk of offending someone is less, as it appears to them as a standard of operation. I can tell you that it didn't do anything for the norovirus outbreak that happened in December. I do have a suggestion for the therapists that spend time working in the axillary region and have trouble removing the smell. I have found that shaving cream...yes shaving cream removes most offensive odors including axillary secretions. It also removes onion and garlic odor.

Thanks Kwilko, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of shaving cream in my book.

I guess I can understand the smelly armpit thing but I still wonder if it still isn't a bit germ-phobic to wear gloves all the time.  Like, even in public opening a door, shaking someone's hand, taking change from a cashier, etc.etc. you get the point.  Most of the time, I think good ol' handwashing and hand sanitizers should take care of whatever worries you.  BTW my three years in private practice here, I have only been out one day due to illness compared to about four or five a year when I worked hospital outpatient.  We wipe down everything with Clorox wipes after each patient session, so I think that helps alot.
Now that we have discussed body odor--how do you handle it when patients wear too much perfume/aftershave.  Now THAT makes me want to miss my lunch.

During the eval, if the patient is wearing too much perfume or aftershave, I make it very clear that they don't wear it at all during PT visits afterwards. If they don't, then I make it clear that I won't be able to work with them. No exceptions.

I'm with you JMA, some perfumes are vanilla based and I can't stand them, I've taken a stand that my workplace should not have to be hosed down after each patient with disgusting taste in perfume, so I make it clear also. Down with shoddy perfumes.,

Hey Holly,
It is definitely easy to become a germaphobe if one wants.  I try to not think of who might have touched what, and what they touched before they touched the doorknob.  Otherwise, I would become OCD.  Universal precautions will prevent disease.  However, I dont glove up for everyone.  Just when I dont want stinky hands, or there is any chance of passage of blood borne pathogens in either direction.

In regards to aftershave, cologne, perfume, I kindly remind my patients that it is not a substitute for showering.  Actually, I have a somewhat true point on this, in that there are some patients who are sensative to these chemicals, due to asthma or other conditions  ( I work in a very large hospital), and therefore, for the safety of others, I ask them to tone it down a bit.  Not to mention that if they should pass a smoker outside, they may ignite into a ball of fire due to fumes, and that is usually incentive enough.

Thanks for getting me out from under my dark cloud today!  You are one of the few posters who actually make me GOL (I don't really laugh, more of a giggle)  If you ever think about taking it out on the road, let me know (workshop title: humor for overworked health care providers)  Sorry--getting ready for vacation and cramming 5 days of work into 2.

Hey all,

Shill,

Standard precautions are a given with respect to washing hands before and after each patient, even with use of gloves. Perhaps I should elaborate on my comment. There are times working in that region that your wrist/forearm may come in contact with an undesirable secretion and I simply was saying that shaving cream helps remove that odor along with things people come in contact with at home, not that shaving cream prevents germs from penetrating our immune systems. More that it helps with taking the smell home with the therapist. The fact that all staff wear gloves does make it less of a concern for the patient's dignity and at the same time protects me from unknown pathogens, however as I mentioned, it does not prevent all germs.

Ahhh.  I see.  Then thanks for the helpful tip.  One can rarely really get the complete message with text alone, unless the writer goes to extreme lengths to explain, as you did.  Thanks.
