I've tried teaching transversus abdominus and multifidus to patients. I find that it takes a lot of patience on both the PT's and patients part. The evidence that supports these techniques was devleoped using a real time ultrasound which most PT's don't have access to. I find Sahrmann's progression of lower abdonimal re-training has been effective for some of my patients.

For a detailed explanation of TrA and MF I recommend reading Therapeutic Exercise for Spinal Segmental Stabilization in LBP by Richardson et al 1999.

Actually, the second edition of Richardson's book came out last year. I've read the first edition, but not the second. Given the copious research that group publishes, its relatively easy to stay up on their ideas.
