Now you are what I was once called by the Administrator from a local group of orthos..."OCS stands for Official C..k S,,ker. I was on good terms with him, and it made me laugh. It was really in reference to another PT in the area, and I won't tell you what CSCS stood for, in his mind.

Congratualtions to both of you! When I was at the APTA meeting recently I purchased the packet (self assessment tool) for the OCS. Would anybody like to recommend a review book, if possible? I have "Orthopaedic Review for Physical Therapists" by Loth and Wadsworth. Any other suggestions?
Tks.

I ended up using "Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Secrets" by Placzek and Boyce, the latest edition of Brotzman and Wilk's rehab book, the pocket-book sized "Rehabilitation SPecialists Handbook" by Wolf (I think), plus an pathology/screening text (very important). I ended up going to Healthcare Education Associates review course for the exam, which was the most helpful thing that I did. After I got back, I basically took the course notes from that and re-typed and supplemented them as I read them and everything else noted above and below. I ended up with quite a nice reference book out of it all. I re-read the above texts and caught up on major articles from JOSPT and PT, a few articles from Spine and other journals, and made sure that I read through the first few chapters of the Guide to Physical Therapy Practice. What else.....I really went hard over my muscle cards (re-typed them), relearned brachial and lumbosacral plexuses, studied the various upper and lower extremity nerve entrappments (very important). I went through my statistics notes. Since I graduated way back in 1989, EBP was something that I never was formally taught, so I had to go and read up on that very carefully - don't just know the concepts, you need to know the EBP articles published in PT back over the last few years, and apply this to clinical decisions in the questions. There's probably more... The big thing (which they emphasized in the prep course) was to know the basics really well - don't get too hung up on esoteric stuff. Oh, know your kinesiology, including subcranial and TMJ biomechanics - that was quite helpful. I put off taking the OCS for a long time, first due to finishing up a manual certification (back in 1996-1999), then due to finishing a transitional DPT (2004). Looking back, I'm glad I did wait so long, because both the certification and the DPT prepared me well for the exam, and I really, really enjoyed the review process. I'll stop there, I'm starting to ramble; I'd be glad to answer any other questions, though

Congratulations to everyone who passed. You should try to make the ceremony at CSM, it's pretty cool.

John D- yep, Orthos are funny. They don't want to hear what I think "MD" stands for, either.
:)

Congratulations to all of you!!!!! I agree that the ceremony is worth it. I am not usually one for such events but they really go out of their way to acknowledge your accomplishment.

Take care,
Mcap

Ptherpca,
You can go to this link to find about the OCS, SCS and the other specialty certifications. Once you get to the webpage, you can also click on the upper left for even more information about it. Please go to this link:

http://www.apta.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Certification2&Template=/TaggedPage/TaggedPageDisplay.cfm&TPLID=206&ContentID=20415

Hope this helps out.

jma,

i browsed on it. it says there this is what i need to do: (1) current licensure to practice physical therapy in the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands and (2) evidence of a minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice in the specialty area, 25% of which must have occurred within the last 3 years.

does this mean i don't need to take any seminars or classes although i'd rather attend some, especially manual therapy ones.

thanks again!
