If they were smart, the ACA, APTA, AOTA, AMA, Etc. would all get together and work to demand reform within the insurance industry. Highmark Blue Shield in PA has billions of dollars in reserve yet they keep cutting our collective throats (as in all healthcare professionals), and on top of that charge ridiculous premiums. I have a family of four paying over $800 per month for their health insurance. They are looking into to paying for everything out of pocket and just carrying catastrophe insurance with 5-10,000 deductables, just in case something big happens.

If we were all smart we wouldn't accept insurances in the first place. Cash pay only and let the individuals recoup what they can from the insurance companies. This would definitely separate the average joe or below average clinician from the clinician who continues to learn and grow year by year. It would probably throw the corporate big boys in a tailspin as well. As Jason stated it's only when the 3rd party system falls apart or the plan's participents demand change that change will actually take place. The future is cash pay or health care spending accounts and I for one am ready.

For PTs it's the Direct Access animal we need to tame and then let the best man/woman win. I am @#!!!#$%% ready for a challenge! In my area I am already seeing a few more cash paying pts trickling in. If I can get them better faster then I get to win-it is that simple..and the way ins. premiums are going people are going to go for very high deductible plans and pay cash for minor aches/pains/cough/colds. Already a small cahin of 4 pharmacies in my arae is giving major discounts on cash paying pts. Canadian meds coming from the border is going to make Pharma cos to reduce prices and it seems that it is happening already. I have Merck's drug rep as my pt. and she is telling that cut backs and layoffs are happening already for reps-this is due to the foreign drugs coming through our borders. Direct Access is freedom-which has it's own problems.
