Erica Francisco -> winging of the scapula (February 23, 2000 4:12:00 PM)

what causes lateral winging of the scapula? and what causes medial winging? weakness of the serratus anterior? trapezius?

weakness of the serratus anterior causes winging medially, but I am not sure about laterally. Are you familiar with strengthening of the serratus?

I believe lateral winging of the scapula can be caused by trapezius muscle weakness or injury to the spinal accessory nerve.

Medial winging is weakness of serratus anterior, or tightness of Rhomboids, Teres Major.

I'm not quite sure what lateral winging is though--do you mean inferior angle winging--this is caused by weak lower Traps or Rhomboid (esp Major) or a tight Pectoralis Minor.

Good catch Jeff. I've never seen "lateral" winging either . . . but I'd bet it looks pretty cool.

Here's the next level question though . . . from a NDT/developmental perspective poor development of what MUSCLE, what causes poor development of control of the serratus anterior??

(HINT - The answer can be found in, among other sources, Lois Bly's 1999 book - An Illustrated Guide to Motor Skill Aquisition In the First Year of Life). The book is a qualitative analysis of the development of over 1000 babies.

Sometimes (but not usually significantly) this cause persists into adulthood.
