Im having such a hard time understanding what the fuss is about. Manipulation is not going to win anybody the Noble Prize Manipulation has not shown itself in EBM to be of value. Well, it has, but for every study showing its good there is one showing its not. Its a tool. It is a manual skill, like any other skill. The more you do it, the better you get. But Chiroortho says it should be done under the tutalage of a chiro with experience. I disagree. What makes a manipulation a good manipulation? I have done it 1000's of time. I have no way of knowing if Im good. Patients feel better most of the time, but was it a good manipulation? So. I dont think it should be part of the PT program. You guys are way to good to be spending tuition money on a novelty that is being done by the other guys. It can learned in a weekend.

Chirx, I don't agree. There are some specific RCTs that recently have shown great promise, and at least one validated, large RCT that shows definite improvement. Keeping manipulation in our practice acts is important, as this "novelty" is being challenged by some groups, even as PTs continue to produce the trials of highest quality regarding the use of this modality. We can discuss about whether an individual would choose to use it, but we can probably all agree that it should continue to be taught.
And I wholeheartedly agree with your statement about being learned in a weekend. Certainly the most recent RCTs show just the use of one technique is all it takes, at least for the acute LBP folks. Here is a website to take a look at: www.evidenceinmotion.com Click on the box on the right to look at the video.
