Navy, Most PT schools obviously require certain prerequisites. I for one graduated with a BS in Biology/Chemistry (originally thinking of going to med school) and then subsequently got accepted to PT school and earned my MPT.
I don't think the field is bleak at all...at least IMHO. I think any field/profession has people within it that are burned out and have nothing to do except complain. Cynicism/pessimism is something that I frown upon.
With that said, I would just go for the PT degree. Most schools as of late are making the transition from the Masters to the Doctorate or MPT-->DPT degree. In regards to your Bachelors question, I'd seek a BA in Biology and possibly a minor in Psychology.
I think that your decision to possibly become a therapist is an honorable one. This field has a lot to offer and it can be very rewarding.
Good luck with your quest
