Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone out there has participated with the armed services collegiate program that helps pay for tuition to PT school in exchange for service after graduation. Has anyone had any experience with such a program or worked at a military hospital or clinic? I am going to a private DPT program and I am looking for any help I can get with the costs so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Dash,
I was wondering if you had found anything out about serving time in the military in order for them to pay for your tuition and expenses. I have been accepted to a private DPT program as well and I am in desperate need of funding.

Check with your local Air Force recruiter.
When I was in school (91-93) they were looking for PT's desperately. They actually flew a group of us from Wisconsin to Florida to see what it would be like. In the private sector, you can also potentially get a "sign on bonus" which would require you to work with a certain company for a year or more, and they would give you a lump sum of money, which would pay for some or part of your schooling. I did this for my first year, with a company called Baxter, which was bought out a couple of times and the clinic I worked at eventually became a Healthsouth clinic.Despite the assembly line characteristics of the job, it was good exerience for a year, and I have since returned to a Hospital Outpatient setting.
Any way, there are some thoughts for you.

I did a grad school intership with a former military PT...and he referred to it as a good experience, but I believe his criteria was based on a strong and personality - which was very independent. When I entered the profession in '97 I was easily able to negotiate "loan-relief $$$" for each of the first 3-years of my employment...and I know of others that signed on with hospital-based facilities before graduation for assistance with loans. Good-luck, I believe the rural hospitals are much easier to negotiate with...and still allow both a flexible work environment and staff support.

Military PT is great. Check out this website and watch the online video of my collegue CPT Kirk McBride. He says it all. You can also find the information you seek and a recruitor (who is an Army PT) to help answer your questions. Good luck,
