Has anyone completed their t-DPT online and if so...just wondering if it was a positive experience or not? I'm debating whether or not to do it online and was looking at several different programs. Anyone have a favorite? Thanks!

I'm almost completed with mine and it has been a nice experience and definitely positive thus far. I'm doing this through my former alma mater, which is nice because I don't have to take more courses that other t-DPT programs require.

i was wondering how this transitional DPT works.dont we have to attend any classes , can we do the whole course online ?if so ,how abt clinical experience ?
can u suggest me some university progams in newyork city ?

DSCPT, im thinking of enrolling in St.ANdrews Uni, any thought on their program there...what can I do after grad?

i took nova's online DPT. Since i went there for my masters I only had to take 6 total classes. I got permission to complete it in one year. 3 each semester. It was good, we met for a week each semester on campus and turned it into CEU and got CEU credit for those days.

A DScPT is an ENTIRELY different animal than a t-DPT. For questions about a DScPT we should start a new thread. I did my t-DPT at MGH institute of health professions (Harvard). There's not much to tell, other than it was more work than I expected, but nothing outrageous.

Let's be clear, however, the point of an experienced PT completing a DPT is NOT to BE the vision of the 2020 DPT . . . but rather to TRAIN the DPT of 2020. Those who pursue the DPT thinking that they will be thought of as "doctors" or that they will suddenly be qualified to practice direct access, and have immediate imaging rights, will be SORELY mistaken.

Andrew...I couldn't agree more. I witnessed a PT who had their DPT and would call doctors' offices and start the conversation with 'This is Dr. 'so-and-so''.

then again have you ever heard a podiatrist, an opthmalogist or a chiropractor NOT introduce themselves as Dr so and so?

I am going to get bashed by all the parisers, but basically if you do enough asking around and research you'll see that USA shouldn't even be accredited for the most part. If you LOVe paris' principles and think everything else is crap then go there, otherwise if you'd like I can bash that program in private with you.

If you want to live Vision 2020 now, just join the Army.
At least that's what I was saying at the recruiting booth last week at APTA conference.
I had several interested students, and most were from St Augustine. They seemed perfectly competent to me.

I would add that while Drew considers a DSc and DPT radically different, most healthcare practitioners and all laypeople won't know the difference. Or care, for that matter.

It is my understanding that it is usually considered equivalent to a PhD for university tenure positions, but not always, and that this degree is rather new in the US to state anything with certainty.

Dear Run262,
I think that "So and So Doctor" really deserves to be called Doctor and I don't see ANY reason that he shouldn't. If we (PTs) don't value our profession and our degrees, then who would?!! DPT has NOTHING LESS than any PH.D or any similar degrees. When do we want to start giving some credit to our profession and our degrees???

lekar - sorry...the debate about the DPT and the 'doctor' title was was not my original topic. I simply wanted to know about transitional DPT programs. :) However, it suddenly got switched into this much heated topic. I can understand why, as I can see both sides.

Lekar,

While I agree that our profession should value our DPT's, t-DPT's in particular, and as a group give them more respect than we've done to date . . . there is a WIDE GAP between the education, time, and rigor of a DPT versus a PhD program. Statements like that weaken your case.

There is little difference, however, in standards and rigor between a DPT and other non-medical clinical doctoring degrees such as PsyD, PharmD, DC, OD, etc.

What I meant was that as long as someone has doctrate degree (like DO,DC,OD,PH.D,...) they are all entiteled to be called "doctor" (unless it is specifically prohibited by their own board). Discussion about which doctor knows more than the other doctors (or who has higher ranking compared to others) is another topic that I really don't want to get into it. I just want to say we should be more proud and confident about our profession and when anyone with any kind of doctrate degree can be called "doctor", why not DPTs?! Is it just because we are too down to earth???!!!

There is an article about the online t-DPT in the recent Advance magazine that I just read today. They were saying good things about the online classes saying that it is convenient because most PTs either don't have the time to sit in class all day or don't live near a school that offers it.

I will be doing my tDPT online for the same reasons.
