I am currently getting a bachelors degree in biology and after attaining that I plan on transferring to an accredited PT school...my question is, the biology degree will take me 4 years to complete and then PT school will be another 3 years...is this a reasonable amount of schooling to become a PT? or do you think I'm spending to many years at school?

also, With my major in biology, i will be taking care of all PT pre-requisites, but I was also thinking about minoring in Athletic Training...will I have to take a bunch of different calsses if I want to minor in AT or will most of them already be covered by the PT pre-requisites and my Biology major?

that is how many years it takes, you should have your DPT from that many years, and yes it is worth getting an atc degree if you plan on going into orthopedics or sports aspect of PT. It is worth it if you have time for it, that is putting in all the hours in the training room you'll need to do for the degree. no, all of the ATC courses:at 1, at2, etc, are not covered by the PT pre-reqs. It is a pretty good time committment, but you should do it while you're there...

i appreciate the reply mate, this is my first year in school and I'm loving everything about the experience I have started...by the way, do you think it is wise to first obtain a Bachelor's degree in biology and then transfer to an accredited program for the masters/doctorate level degree or do you think I should try to transfer now and fulfill the pre-requisites at the accredited school? I think some/most school want you to be in their program the entire time but some school's do accept transfers correct?

sorry to bombard you with questions but I won't be starting the AT part until next year (my sophomore year) if I do decide to get into it...is that too late to begin such a program?

The majority of ATEP begin in the sophmore year and last three years. There are some which are only two years, but those are highly frowned upon. It is not necessary to complete your pre-req's at a school with a PT program. However, if you are looking at Athletic training make sure that the program is accredited. You cannot site for the NATABOC exam without graduating from an accredited program. Amazingly, there are still programs out there operating with out accreditation.

A degree in biology is really not necessary, you end up taking a lot of extra classes you don't need. With a major in Athletic training you can still take all the pre-reqs and come out with a much more useful degree.

thx guys, I am defintely considering just going after the degree in Athletic Training and forgetting about Biology, but I noticed that most PT pre-requisites are not covered in the AT program, I guess I will just have to work that much harder to get done what I need for PT school...
