hello all,

i'm new around here but have a few questions to shoot your way

I am currently attending a local Community College (JWCC) because money is tight in my household. I am 19 and this is my 3rd semester at this community college. I plan on finishing after 4 semesters here (obtaining an associates degree in Biology) and transferring to a university that offers a Pre-Physical Therapy program. Me and my guidance counselor already have my classes setup to transfer (i just hope to god they do b/c if I took those classes for nothing I would be very ticked). Could you please take a look at the classes I have taken and give me an idea if they look at all like the classes you PT already completed...

I have taken these classes so far...

Now a few questions...


1. I was just wondering... This univesity's pre-physical therapy program is setup to meet all the pre-requisites that would be needed but it is a four year program...that means I would have to go there for at least 2 years (maybe even 2.5 years to make up some of the classes I could not take at the community college). Is 4 / 4.5 years a normal length of time to meet all the pre-requisites you need to be able to go into grad school?

2. Do you think I will be "looked down upon" by graduate schools because I attended a community college for the first two years of my schooling?

3. How many semesters of schooling does it normally take to get a Masters degree? Doctorates degree? after you have already met all the pre-requisites


I have many more questions and I'm sorry to bombard you all but I need some reinsurrance in my choices in life...I would really appreciate any answers that could be given. Take it easy guys/girls.

i dont think you would be looked down upon just because you attended a community college. the good thing about community colleges is that it has a small student pop.(compared to universities) where in faculty can really concentrate on its students. work it to your advantage. you've already taken human biology so you wont have that much of a problem when it comes to anatomy subjects.

here in our country, pt takes 5 years,4 for academics and pre-internships(introduction to clinics and that sort) and i year for clinical internship.that's just for bachelor's degree.

there are many options laid out for you. what is it exactly that you want to do? i personally am aiming to go into sports med.
just take things slowly and see where it goes from there. play things by ear and relax. you'll get to where you want to be.

thx for the advice nikki, I've been stressing out a lot lately for some reason :/

May i ask where you are from b/c you said "here in our country"?

My plans are to go into this pre-physical therapy program and finish up the rest of the grad school requirements and then move on to a grad school and try for a Doctorate, hopefully specializing in sports medicine. I'm not sure how exactly you would go about "specializing" in sports medicine though... I thought that the Doctorate/Master programs were just guidlines for all types of physical therapy treatment? About how much longer does a Doctorate program take compared to a Masters? Sorry for all the questions but I am very interested in this and am wanting to know what to expect out of my future :)

okay...m here in the philippines-pretty messed up right now with a pokemon character as a president again-she cheated!!! :mad:

as for doctortes and that stuff-i dont think the educational curriculum is standard. i think that it varies.cant help you much with that sorry.
as for my preference in sports med-well,im taking orthopedics next sem...so with that sort of background iuts the most practical and logical path to take.

you're only 19-take it easy. you'll know what you want when you do

A lot of you classes seem like they should transfer but you would probably have a few more to take...I would think you would probably need another chem class, physics-2 semesters, maybe another bio class or 2 and a few other classes. As far as time for prereqs its anywhere between 3-4 or however many you need to get your undergrad degree. Most schools usually look at their own students before transfers but aside from that you shouldnt be looked down too much for being from CC we have one in my class and a couple in the class behind me. Most professional programs seem to be between 2.5-3.5 years for Masters/doctorates...

basing on our curriculum- have to take ethic subjects, pharmacology, pathology, kines.etc... have you ever considered taking those?

It looks like I have taken most of the classes here at my community college that they recommend for the first two years but it also looks like I'm missing a few so I'll have to make those up there at the University

Nikki...I'm not seeing the courses you mentioned, at all?

well, since it is a "pre-pt" curriculum, think of it a genereal subjects every freshman and soph has to take. i guess that you do have to take up the rest at the university. do they allow you to cross-enroll?

Hello,
You will only know what you need to take, once the school evaluates and decides what course will transfer over. Yes, you may have to take some courses to make up for what you may not have taken yet. In my case, there was a course I thought would transfer and it did not, therefore, I had to take the same course again at my school. Just keep track of your GPA and keep it up there and all will be well.

"cross enroll" when you're enrolled in two svhools at the same time.they usually allow it if you need to take a subject and if its not currently offered this semester in your school, you enroll in another school that does offer it for this sem.

i alos agree that you have to keep track of your GPA. have you a had a word with your adviser already?

thanks for the clarification nikki :) , i have a very strong gpa so far, out of all my classes I have had only one B, so my grade point average is around 3.9 at the moment, but I have a full load of tough classes (calc, etc.) that will challenge my gpa this semester
