Can you describe the technique a little better? I am not familiar in this technique to assess strength, but when you ask someone to conduct a lateral step up you are asking them to use their hip abductors (gluteus medius), knee extensors (quadriceps) and hip flexors (iliopsoas) among others.

Very common test, the goal is a controlled step (usually down) maintaining the patella in the sagital plain and midline without dropping the hip. Many times it is used to slowly control foot as it approaches the floor as a test of eccentric strength.

It is Gary Gray stuff.

See, its been 7 years at least and I still haven't lost it!

Additionally, if patient focuses on keeping their pelvic girdle level, this technique is useful to promote hip(glut med) control/strength/endurance.
