StephanieC -> school and career questions (January 10, 2003 10:19:00 AM)

I graduated in May 2002 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. I have been working as an engineer in for the past five months now, and realize now that this is definately not the career for me. I have always been interested in a career in physical therapy, but never seriously considered it until now. I have a few questions, if anyone can give me some answers, or point me in the right direction, I would definately appreciate it!
1. How much more additional schooling will I need on top of my current degree to become a physical therapist?
2. My fiance is in the Navy and we will probably be moving quite often...my present career as a chemical engineer does not lend itself well to this lifestyle. My guess would be that physical therapy would be a little more flexible (no pun intended) and that it would not be limited geographically to one or two regions in the United States, like my present job. Am I correct in thinking this?
Thanks so much!

Hello,
Right off the back, the best site to look for information about this can be found at: http://www.apta.org

From my personal experience, it may take between 3-4 years extra school time, depending if you go for a Master's or Doctorate program in PT.

As far a traveling goes, yes, you can go to other places and practice PT. It also depends where you go. Many states require you to take another exam in addition to the licensing exam. Others who have done this may be of more help here.
