Hi guys,
I just wanna ask,how would u react to patient whose taking advantage of your kindness, doing unacceptable things while you are inbetween treatment?Would you avoid him? Would you refer him to another PT?would you discontiniou the treatment? What is the proper way to say that you dont like what his doing.

Ist:

This is a tricky yet common situation. I agree with SJ......it would depend on his situation and what he is doing inbetween treatment.

I would ask what you mean by taking advantage of your kindness?? Is this something above and beyond your job responsibilities.....if so....you may need to examine what you are doing with him.

With patients I always just state bluntly that I think what they are doing is interfearing with rehab. If they refuse, and they truly aren't making any progress as a result, then I have a discussion with them about how appropriate it is to continue. A lot of times, if the activity isn't that harmful, you can get them to stop temporarily with the understanding that they can eventually go back (the runner types!!).

Good luck....

I didn't pick up on the SJ angle because you said inbetween treatment. I interpret that to mean between visits, while he is at home.

If you are talking about something more like what SJ mentioned.....then please be a little more specific if you want more advice.

Thanks...
