k8y_chi15 -> QUALIFYING EXAM TO BE A PT (October 8, 2001 9:27:00 PM)

in our school, all second year physical therapy students need to take a qualifying exam in order to be accepted in the proper years.now, we should get a grade of 75% above in order to pass the exam and thats what made it so hard to be a pt student. i mean if we fail the exam, then its adios PT!i was just wondering, are all schools of PT make their students take an exam in order to enter PT proper?

Hello,
This is the first time I have ever heard of such an exam! Is this exam is given by the PT department and what does this exam consist of? As far as my school goes, we only have to maintain a GPA of 3.0 with grades of 80% and above in all of our classes to stay in the program. If this GPA cannot be maintained, then we are place on probation for one semester and our grades for the next semester must improve. If we fail to accomplish this, then we are dismissed from the program. I can't begin to imagine what this exam consists of, not to mention all the other exams from your other courses you have to take. I hope you do well when the time comes to take it.

A similar test is required for my school. It is taken before we go out on our final internship. It is comprehensive, and we must get an 80% to pass. We are allowed 1 retake. If the the retake is failed, we are dismissed from the program. It seems unrealistic at first, but graduates tell me it is an awesome way to prepare for the licensure exam

Hello,
Now that I am reading more about this exam, it is beginning to make sense. Is this exam something that was in effect ever since your programs started or is this something new? Maybe one day, this may be adopted in my school. What a way to make you study for your boards!!!

now that i have read your post jma, your'e right!it's an advantage to us because at least it's a way to study for our board exam and we would figure out as early as possible whether pt is really for us

Hello,
To those members that have to take the test to continue in the program, I have a few questions to ask you. What is the passing scores for the test? Are the questions similar to the National board exam? Are they done on computer? And finally, how many students pass the exam from those who know or have taken the exam? Makes for an interesting study on board exam preparation. Thank you for your responses

hello there!
Yes thats's true! All of the schools of the Physical Therapy here in the Philippines specifically speaking, we all have a qualifying exams before we eneter into our third year and another one again before the interships. It was really hard and the passing is 75%. But it will help us to prepare on the board examinations. Imagine how hard it can be getting 75% ratings and the exams too. But it was deserving as the students who passed were screened and it assure that they will be having a qualified therapist students...

Hello,
Thank you for your response. I never knew about this exam, especially being given in the Phillipines. I can't even begin to imagine, thinking or studying for this exam on top of everything else you had to study for. But in the end, I'm sure it was worth it and everyone who passed did well on their board exams. You wouldn't know if you have study material related to this? Or did you just use your notes to study? I don't know if the first few posts were from students who took the same exam in the states. I'd like to know how they did as well and what they used. I'm almost done. One more clinical to go and then its time for my boards. Good luck to everyone.
