To graduating PT students or those who are in contact with students: What is the outlook for employment for new grads. Are you finding the job market competitive? What is the salary range that employers are offering?

I graduated less than 2 years ago. I submitted over 50 resumes and received 5 responses. Went to 4 interviews and got 1 job that payed low 40s. I understnad now that many of the graduates from where i went to school have a more difficult time than that and infact many of the latests graduates have not yet found employment in PT. I live in Virginia. I understand that the Northern Virginia market is even worse for established PTs than new grads and starting salaries are low 30s. my impression of the outlook is that if the grad is willing to move to a rural location he/she can find work at a decent pay. If the grad wants to stay in the area in which he/she went to school, good luck.

I graduated in December of 98... I too sent out about 50 resumes, to places within about 45 miles of my house... at first I was selective, then I was sending everywhere... nursing homes,ads in the paper, advance.. anywhere to get a PT job..
I received about 7 calls back... some were shady... working with a chiropractor... pain clinics... something I wasn't into as a new grad.. I went on 5 interviews, and got 2 offers out of 5. One though was over an hour commute.. I live in southern NY, about 1/2 hr. north of the city, on the jersey border and this job was down in jersey city... a horrible commute... Then the other offer I got i took, 15 min. from home... lucked out! Love it...
I've seen the salary being in the low 40 high 30 range... for here and even upstate in the syracuse area, where some of my friends live..
Since I've been working, I've received about 5 or so other calls for interviews from resumes I've sent back in january!
It seems like more jobs are availabe now, than in jan when I was looking, but who knows for sure... A lot in NYC, which I'm not interested in the commute or moving...
It definitly was tough! Not as easy as we were told as freshman in college!

I graduated about 4 weeks ago from a Master's
degree program. I moved from Rhode Island to Colorado after school because I like the location better...although there is one of the toughest job markets here. I send out resumes almost daily with no luck. Luckily, I got hired by my last affil for per diem work so at least I can pay my rent. My fellow graduates (dispersed all over the country from FL to CA) are in the same boat...some are considering jobs as aides just to stay in the medical field! I hope I won't have to go that route...I'm not one to give up hope even in the most hopeless situations.
P.S. There are plenty of home health agencies with jobs available but unfortunately they don't even want a new grad's resume....two years exp. minimum.

What's the updated version of the employment outlook? I'd appreciate information specifically on varied areas. I'm interested in Rehab, Geriatrics or Neuro. Is it typically easier to start in acute care?
