Andrew M. Ball MS MBA PT -> I'm at a loss, any thoughts? (July 18, 2002 6:06:00 AM)

Dear friends,

Okay, so this former co-worker comes into my office with her grandson. The little guy was diagnosed with Dandy-Walker in utero. Upon birth, doctors still though he had DW, but though it might be a more variant form.

So, the little guy (adorable) comes into my office today (6 months of age) with a history of being able to creep at 4 months, pull to stand and take steps at a push-toy at 6.5 months. Per Cohen et al., children of African American decent typically have higher total mean scores than the Peabody's norm referenced group of mostly White middle-class kids in the 0-5, and 15-29 month age groups. This kid, by contrast, is 6 months of age and has the most developed gross motor abilities of any kid I've ever seen --- Dandy Walker Variant or not. Anyone have any thoughts as to what's going on? Anyone ever seen anything remotely comparable to this?

I'm not a particularly religious person (although the child's grandmother is), but I just can't help feeling the hand of God in all of this.
