I am a PT who works as a full-time employee for a rural school district servicing students ages 3-22. I am looking for input from other school PTs regarding caseload numbers.

Hi, I work for a school district as well.
There is another PT, and we split the schools up. Personally, I have 4 schools... approximately 20 students. We schedule about 7 hours a day... 30 min. lunch, 30 min. prep each day and the rest with students..and travel time... as we are between schools..each week we give ourselves about 1 1/2 hour for eval/write up time.. even if there is no eval scheduled, beleive me, an annual review, phone call, meeting, make up visit... or something else will take up that time!

Thanks for your input....I have 14 schools and 54 students....hopefully we can hire another PT soon!

I couldn't imagine having 14 schools! It's crazy enough being in say 4/day! The travel time must add up! I would think that you would need another PT on staff. Are all of the children direct services? How is that possible to fit in your schedule? I wish you luck [IMG]http://www.rehabedge.com/forums/smile.gif[/IMG]

No, I have about 10 on "consult". I do service the rest of them directly. Most are seen 1 time per week for 30 minutes on an average, I see only a few twice a week. Finding time for IEP paperwork, daily documentation, Medicaid and insurance work for wheelchairs, walkers, standers, etc., is sometimes difficult.

My caseload sometimes varies as I do some home health in addition to my school caseload. I see 33 children in 6 schools.

I can relate! I work for a rural ISD and have been the sole PT until this year. We have just hired a PTA. I have been responsible for 18 schools (different buildings) in two counties. In addition, I do home visits thru Part C. I have 45 children on my caseload. Most are seen once a week for 30min. I am looking forward to doing a better job with kids, paperwork, home communication, and sending updates to doctors now that I have help. Supervising a PTA when we are not in the same building is a concern of mine since she has no school or pediatric experience. Being available to make student visits with her once a month seems the bare minimum to me, but then I'm not sure what to do about the students I'm supposed to be servicing on those days. Any thoughts? Good luck getting some help. For me, I had to put in writing what my caseload was and have a schedule of travel time for the administration to see. What really made them take notice though, was when I kept them updated on students I was not able to see regularly and that made us out of compliance on IEPs. That gets administrators worried about being taken to a hearing!
