Andrew M. Ball, MS, PT -> A Great Loss for Pediatric PT (December 14, 2000 6:50:00 AM)

It is with great sadness that I relay information Mary Quinton's passage. We should all feel very grateful for her wonderful gifts and her willingness to share them with the children, their families, and our profession.

For those of you who didn't Mary or her legacy, Mary Quinton was trained by Karl and Berta Bobath. It was she who expanded upon the work of the Bobath's (which at the time was limited primarily to reflex inhibition through head positioning and reflex inhibiting postures), and expanded upon it. It was Mary, not the Bobaths, who was responsible for the handling techniques that we commonly think of as NDT. Her theories have remained relatively unchanged over the years, and are still the cornerstone of the NDT theory. Without Mary there would have been no Lois Bly, and no Judy Bierman . . . two of her most distinguieshed professional decendents.
