This is Steve Hoffman. I am with BackProject, the company that makes the ATM2 and I teach many of the ATM Concept courses.
Some of you have made some observations with out ATM2 clinical experience. To help answer some of the issues raised, following is a 30 second explanation of what the ATM2 does:
1. By combining joint repositioning (similar to the Mulligan Concept), with compression (similar to the ASLR test), almost all movement impairments can be normalized with in seconds. 2. The restoration of normal movement is an indicator that the CNS has completely transitioned from a pathological muscle activation pattern to a normal muscle activation pattern. 3. Combining active movements in the neutral range, in a functional, weight bearing position, against an isometric resistance, causes the CNS to memorize the normal muscle activation pattern. 4. Almost all patients will feel an immediate, significant and long-lasting reduction if not elimination of pain for back, neck, pelvis, shoulder, hip, and knee movement impairments.
The ATM2 will achieve results that you may never have seen before due to this unique capability to alter CNS muscle activation patterns. These results are achievable for almost all your musculoskeletal patients. Each session only takes several minutes. Besides an immediate relief in pain, people that use the system typically feel taller, looser and stronger immediately after every treatment.
Following is copy of an e-mail I received just a few days ago from John Bonica, PT, CMP, NZRP:
Steve, Here is an unsolicited endorsement of ATM2 based on my experience. As a clinician in private practice for 43 years, having studied with many of the best in the spinal field, including Cyriax, Mulligan, Paris, McKenzie, Kaltenborn, Ovjenth, and Stoddard, I firmly believe spinal pain and it’s appropriate and timely management is still in it’s infancy. There is much that is theory and still poorly understood. Having included the ATM2 in my practice for nearly 2 years, I am more than ever convinced that, despite my considerable armament of techniques, concepts, and tools, the ATM2 often plays an integral part in allowing our clinic to achieve a faster outcome with immediate and often sustainable function and pain amelioration. Can the ATM2 be replicated by any other techniques or tool? No! Would I make the decision to purchase an ATM2 knowing what I know now? Most definitely! For me, the ATM2 is not an exercise machine. I believe it is a CNS modulator and re-educator in making painful movement pain-free in virtually minutes. The ATM2 is a concept, not a methodology. It makes a mockery of the often quoted mantra “no pain, no gain”, instead, our mantra “gain without pain” is the absolute requirement. Not in a few hours or within a few days, but immediately if applied with sound clinical reasoning skills and good biomechanical knowledge. I can say without reservation that without the ATM2 I would not achieve the same outcome with such ease and so quickly. John Bonica, P.T., C.M.P., N.Z.R.P.
I will be glad to answer any questions / comments / objections / etc. Thanks, Steve.
