CuriousGeorge -> stretch post fusion (December 3, 2001 2:27:00 PM)

I have a friend who had an anterior cage fusion at L4-L5, L5-S1. She has a slender build (110 pounds) and developed sacrum pain post fusion. 6 months post fusion she had a physical therapist (185 pounds), while she layed on a table on her back, bend the L knee/hip so L knee went to R shoulder--- and then he applied all his weight to the back of the bent up thigh--- and then he pulled himself against the table and herself to make it more forceful. She was pushed into excruciating pain. After the third visit she had to stop. Her pain intensified and started to radiate down both legs from her buttocks, her numbness and tingling started back down her R leg and into her foot. SHe now can barely walk. What could have possibly gone wrong? Was this a good idea to do after fusion surgery? Would you have done these stretches? She feels betrayed.

ok, first i don't know if you will even read this reply since you posted several months ago, but hopefully i can offer some advice. sacral pain post fusion is often caused by the fact that there was a sacral dysfunction that was not addressed prior to the surgery and now that dysfunction is fused into place. for further explanation of sacral dysfunctions i recommend that you research Mitchell's model in the osteopathic literature. was the treatment modality used by this PT wise? i can't answer that question for sure. what i can say is that this patient can most likely be helped without further surgery which will most likely make things worse. for more info write my email address.

gee,

i've been practicing for 9 years already and had seen a lot of pain like that personally, i won't do such a thing! the chances of getting something wrong is pretty high.

i wonder if the guy was really a PT.
